Opportunities

Whether you are rowing, running, or even cycling, be sure to take all the opportunities you can get to execute your technique to standard. If you’re rowing at 26 strokes/minute, then each of the 26 strokes in each of the minutes you row should start with you in the Catch Pose, Falling back and changing to the Finish Pose, feeling the right muscles respond. If you do that in each and every rowing stroke, then you should be feeling the bigger muscles and not the smaller muscles responding to the action you’re taking. We should be moving as efficiently as possible. This means we have to be performing all the correct actions necessary to get the result we want, to the standard we know, with the least effort as possible. 26 strokes/minute means you have 26 opportunities to do it right. 180 pulls/minute means you have 180 opportunities to run correctly. 90 rotations/minute on a bicycle means 90 opportunities to pedal properly. Improving on your ability to do this at increasing speeds and distances requires your complete focus and discipline to train your mind to stick to the standard. Your body should follow your mind in executing correct technique. These three specific movements are just analogs to an infinite number of tasks that you might do in your lifetime. There is a technique to any task; how well can you execute that technique for that task? How many opportunities are you going to capitalize on, or squander, to get it right?
